Over the past several weeks, Unifor Local 531 has heard your concerns loud and clear. We’ve received numerous reports from members regarding injuries and near misses associated with closing the Main Cabin Door (MCD)—and we want you to know how the union is taking action. While this issue is not currently a direct violation of the Collective Agreement, it falls under Occupational Health and Safety and that’s where we are focusing our efforts.
What the Union Is Doing
We are treating this as a serious workplace safety issue and have initiated the following steps:
Your YYZ SRC team and Unit Chair Erica Kelly are in ongoing discussions with the company, providing real-time feedback and ensuring your rights are protected.
June marks Pride Month; a time to honour the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, reflect on the progress made, and recommit ourselves to building a future where everyone can live authentically and safely.
At Unifor Local 531, we believe that diversity is our strength. The many identities, stories, and lived experiences of our members make our union brighter, stronger, and more united. We don’t just celebrate Pride in June; we celebrate and protect the right to be yourself every day of the year.
Unifor Local 531 is strongly condemning the company's ongoing practice of relying on our members, especially those who work below the wing to use their personal cell phones to complete workplace duties.
We want to congratulate the WestJet Crew Schedulers who filed their application with the Canadian Industrial Relations Board. This progress is inspiring and it shows what's possible when we stand together. The application represents Crew Schedulers, Lead Crew Schedulers and Shift Lead Crew Schedulers at WestJet.
In the coming days and weeks, the CIRB will begin its standard process. Here’s what to expect:
On Thursday, May 15, the company's Chief Financial Officer and Chief People Officer took part in a recorded podcast to discuss the current state of the business. A key topic they addressed was the decision not to distribute profit share for Q4 2024 and Q1 2025. We understand this has been disappointing for many members—and we share your concerns about the explanation provided.
While certain policies such as the Employee Travel Privileges, Acceptable Use, and Code of Conduct, fall outside the scope of our Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), they are still enforceable.
From June 15 to 17, the G7 Summit will be held in Kananaskis, Alberta, with many delegates and officials arriving through YYC Calgary International Airport.
The process for time worked and accrual percentages remains unchanged from pre-to post-CBA, as outlined in Article 15 (specifically 15-1.10 for the accrual chart).
Each month, your union works hard behind the scenes to protect your rights, uphold the Collective Agreement, and ensure fair treatment in the workplace.
Tracy-Lynne MacLellan, YYC Women's Advocate and Workplace Representative shares her experience as a first time delegate at Unifor Prairie Regional Council.
On International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia, Unifor reflects on lives impacted by hate and reaffirms our commitment to bringing working people together with respect and shared purpose in times of growing division.
The union is committed to advocating for and supporting our members, and part of that responsibility includes proactively addressing workplace concerns before they escalate into investigative meetings with the company.
On behalf of the Executive Board of Unifor Local 531, we are deeply saddened and disturbed by the senseless act of violence that occurred at the Lapu-Lapu Day Festival in Vancouver this past Saturday.
In light of the recent and concerning shooting at Terminal 1 in Toronto, we want to take a moment to focus on something that matters above all else—your safety.
